ONE of Boro's best ever goalkeepers, Stephen made more than 400 appearances for the club between 1983 and 1995.

He joined from Manchester United, initially on loan before impressing manager Willie Maddren enough to earn a permanent deal for a bargain £80,000 in 1985.

During his time with Boro he was called up by England but had to pull out of the squad through injury.

Stepped up from his role as Academy goalkeeping coach to take up the senior role once again after the departure of Paul Barron in November 2007.
