Andraz Sporar's hopes of reaching next year's World Cup with Slovenia all but came to an end in Maribor on Monday evening.

A 2-1 defeat at the hands of Russia leaves Slovenia in fourth place in Group H, seven points behind second placed Croatia with just two games remaining.

Sporar, who scored his first World Cup qualifying goal in the win against Malta last week, had a hand in Josep Ilicic's goal for Slovenia against Russia and played 72 minutes of the game.

Russia struck twice in the space of four first half minutes before Ilicic pulled one back five minutes before half-time. Jasmin Kurtic thought he'd equalised 13 minutes from time, but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR.

Slovenia reconvene in November for their final two group matches, against Slovakia and Croatia.
